Space Radiation and its Biological Effects

During prolonged space missions, astronauts can be exposed to ionizing radiation from a variety of sources, including galactic cosmic rays and solar protons. These types of radiation are significantly different from that found terrestrially, and their health effects remain uncertain. In this talk, the biophysical characteristics of space radiations will be briefly discussed. Highlights of our mechanistic understanding of the biological changes they induce in cells and tissues will be covered and compared with effects induced by X and gamma rays.
