University of Toronto Professor Matthew Morton, a celebrated medical educator, died on Thursday August 27 following a long battle with brain cancer.

Morton was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a physician at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Morton was honoured with the 2015 CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education in June. It is sponsored by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a committee of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Graduating residents presented the award from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was previously recognized with the Wightman Berris Academy Individual Teaching Award, the Frederick Papsin Postgraduate Medical Education Award and the Best Resident Clinical Educator in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He is remembered by his wife Heidi and their children, Brooke, Zachary and Joshua. His funeral was held on August 28 and shiva continues until September 2. Donations are being accepted in Morton’s honour by Chai Lifeline Canada. A team of his friends, family and colleagues will be running the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon in October on Morton's behalf to also raise funds for Chai Lifeline Canada

The University of Toronto flag will be lowered on all three campuses in honour of Morton on September 2. He spoke to CTV Toronto in June about life with the deadly disease and The Toronto Star reported on his CREOG award.
