Ontario Brain Institute Public Talk - Sleep and Brain Health

Neuroscientists are continuously making inroads to unravel the mysteries of sleep - an activity that each of us will be doing for approximately one-third of our lives. Research suggests that sleep plays many important roles – including the consolidation of memories and the housekeeping function of clearing toxins from our brain that accumulate while we are awake.

Join an expert panel of scientists and advocates to learn more about the biological basis of sleep, its impact on brain healthacross the lifespan and practical tips to improve your sleep quality.

About the Speakers:

Dr. Andrew Lim, an investigator at ONDRI (OBI’s neurodegenerative diseases research program) and scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Andrew studies the impact of sleep on cognitive decline, dementia andneurodegenerative diseases.

Shelley, a retired mental health lawyer and a member of the ONDRI Patient and Community Advisory Committee. Shelley has a close family member who was recently diagnosed with dementia.

Dr. Penny Corkum, a registered child psychologist and professor at Dalhousie University. Penny is the Principal Investigator for Better Nights, Better Days - an eHealth program that helps parents to help their children sleep better.

Moderated by Dr. Samantha Yammine, PhD, a neuroscientist and popular science communicator who goes by the name of "Science Sam" online. She earned her PhD from the University of Toronto, studying how stem cells help build and maintain the brain. You can find her talking about science all over social media as @science.sam, and on shows on Netflix, CBC GEM, TVO Kids and CBC Radio.

This is a public talk hosted by the The Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) as part of their 2020/21 series of OBI Public Talks.
