Remembering Raynauld Ko
The Faculty of Medicine has lost an outstanding faculty member, clinician and friend. Professor Raynauld (Ray) Ko died on August 11.
Ko was an assistant professor in anesthesia and served as director of acute pain service and director of clinical services at the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) of the University Health Network. In addition, he served in several other key leadership positions at TGH, including as director of postgraduate resident program, and chief operating room coordinator for anesthesia. He was a long-time director of the anesthesia quality assurance committee and an active member of various other committees.
Throughout his career, Ko demonstrated an outstanding level of clinical skill and leadership. He was supportive with patients and families, collaborated readily with colleagues and students, and encouraged patient advocacy. Just this year, he received the Department of Anesthesia’s Clinical Excellence Award for TGH.
Ko obtained his B.Sc. in biochemistry with honours in 1993, his medical degree in 1997 and a fellowship in anesthesiology in 2002, all from McGill University. After completing a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship in anesthesia and pain management at TGH in 2003, he was recruited to active staff at the hospital and to a faculty position as lecturer in the department of anesthesia at the University of Toronto. In 2008, he was promoted to assistant professor.
A celebration of Ko’s life was held August 15 and the University of Toronto flag at Simcoe Hall will be lowered to half-mast on Wednesday, August 19th in his memory.
