External Education and Teaching Awards

Our Faculty is home to award-winning educators

Over the past 5 years, our faculty members have won over 50 prestigious education and teaching awards offered at the institutional, provincial, national and international levels. In order to recognize the exceptional contributions that are being made to medical education, we conduct two Faculty-wide competitions per year to identify excellence in teaching and education scholarship, innovation and leadership.

Through a rigorous adjudication process, the Faculty's Education and Teaching Awards Committee (ETA Committee) makes nomination recommendations to the Dean of Medicine for up to 19 decanally supported education and teaching awards. Successful candidates are advanced to compete for a variety of awards recognizing excellence in domains across medical education at the institutional, provincial, national and international levels.

We invite you to learn more about our open competitions, the nomination and adjudication process and the full suite of awards that our office supports, and to connect with us to stay informed.

Faculty of Medicine Education and Teaching Awards Nomination and Adjudication Process

Each spring and fall, our Faculty's Teaching and Education Awards Committee has the privilege of recognizing individuals who are making significant contributions to medical education. We look for faculty members who are demonstrating excellence in teaching, education scholarship and leadership in education, and we recognize their contributions by supporting their nomination to 19 external education and teaching awards. This diverse selection of provincial, national and international awards fall under the following 8 categories:

  • Early career achievement
  • Career achievement and sustained excellence
  • Excellence in clinical teaching
  • Innovation
  • Equity, diversity and gender
  • Mentorship
  • Program development
  • Faculty development

The ETA Committee – comprised of both faculty and staff and chaired by Professor Allan Kaplan, Vice-Dean of Graduate and Academic Affairs – reviews candidates for external Education and Teaching awards requiring a decanal nomination and makes recommendations to the Dean of Medicine. The committee seeks nominations for consideration twice per year: once in the spring/summer and once in the fall/winter.

We conduct two internal nomination processes per year to select and advance candidates for these awards, one in the fall and one in the spring. The Education and Teaching Awards Committee first reviews nominations and recommends candidates to the Education Vice-Deans, who then make recommendations to the Dean. The Dean grants final approval for the candidates we’ll be advancing, and serves as the nominator for all of these awards.

The fall call for nominations is made in October with a deadline for submission in late November. The spring call for nominations is made in April with a deadline of late May. We may not issue a call for every award, every year. If you wish to consider someone for an award for which there is no call, please contact the Office of the Education Vice-Deans.

Nominations should be made online .

Please note that nominations also require a one-page letter of support from the nominator; this should be emailed, along with the nominee's current CV and Teaching and Education Report, to medicine.awards@utoronto.ca. It is strongly recommended that the nominee's Department Chair be in support of the nomination.

For more information, contact the Office of the Education Vice-Deans at medicine.awards@utoronto.ca or at (416) 946-8067.
